home nursing

Many people today are finding that it is less expensive to hire a home nursing staff or caretaker to help with an elderly parent or spouse, than to move their loved one into a skilled nursing facility.  When you are considering your options regarding home nursing, be sure to check the agency’s references, educational documents, and their policies on care.  Many people are surprised to learn that they have hired a caregiver instead of a registered nurse, and this is where mistakes are made and patients are neglected or abused.

Be sure to ask for references of other patients that have used the home nursing agency that you have selected.  If you are still looking for a home care nurse for your senior family member, be sure that you are choosing a reputable company.  If your home care does not involve a lot of medical needs, hiring a caregiver that does not have any sort of medical accreditation might actually save you a lot of money.  Caregivers are usually trained in emergency resuscitation techniques, but cannot administer other medications.  They are helpful if you need someone to help with grooming, bathing and feeding.

Visit our Senior Care Resource guide for more information on finding a home nursing agency in your area.  Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions and get a lot of references from the agency and caregiver or nurse before you hire them.  And always remember, he or she is YOUR employee, and you reserve the right to fire them if they are doing an unsatisfactory job.
